Will a croton plant be a good choise?

by Katrina Kenney
(Houston, TX)

I live in Houston,TX. We are having a terrible hot summer. I have a new small house with a great opportunity to have a beautiful ornamental garden in my front yard. Having a difficult time getting anything to survive. I have a affection for crotons.

My house faces west with about 6-8 hours of direct sun. My gardenias died. Do you think crotons will thrive? I have lots of mulch and drainage and can keep them moist. Any other suggestions? My Esperanza and Lantana are doing well.
