What kind of shrub to plant in South florida ?

Question: we have a small patio that we want to put a privacy hedge around . we don't want anything that attracts bugs. The area will not get a lot of water in the summer because we are snowbirds. We would like something fast growing we do not want ficus. We live in southern fl. east coast. Any suggestions you have will be grateful.

Answer: Here are some shrub that grow in South Florida.

Azalea (Rhododendron sp

Bird of paradise

Buxus microphylla var. koreana 'Winter Beauty'

Indian Hawthorn

Ixoria: Ixoria

Croton Petra: Croton Petra

Snow bush: Snow Bush

Of course you know there is no guarantee insects won't feed on your shrubs. As far as watering the shrubs, daily rains are common place in Central and South Florida so you should be okay there.

Gardening tip: Before returning to your home up north, you may want to add some good compost and a layer of mulch. Compost will supply nutrients while your gone and the mulch will retain moisture.

Good Luck
