Once the bromeliad has finished flowering, cut the stem off completely from inside the cup. An single plant will usually bloom once during its lifetime. Now about the pups--(new plants). The Vriesea has about 300 species mostly found in Brazil. These Bromeliads sometimes take years to form a bloom.
