How to Care For A Variegated Ginger
Variegated ginger grown inside is often plagued by spider mites. These are small bugs that have eight legs and they are drawn to dry and hot areas such as your home. Spider Mites bite the plants and this will cause them to become yellow. The leaves may fall off and with a heavy influx of this mite the plants may die. The female of the species has a 30 day life span and during that time can lay as many as 200 eggs. So as you can imagine, this is a problem to be dealt with as soon as you suspect the ginger could have Spider Mites.
Watering the Shell Ginger Plant The shell ginger needs to have plenty of water but there needs to be a good drainage system in place as well. The main thing you need to remember when watering this plant is to water deeply. The watering should be enough to soak the root ball. When they are in a pot, this would mean to water until the water runs from the drain holes. If the plant is in the ground, it should be watered to a depth of at least 6 inches but 12 inches is even better. Ultimately plants should be watered either late in the afternoon or early in the morning. This is less stressful for the plants and if you choose the afternoon to water, you want it to be early enough so the plant's leaves are not wet at night. This can cause the plants to develop a fungus. The varigated ginger plant should not be left until the Leaves are droopy before watering. The ultimate way of making sure they are watered when it is needed is to purchase a drip system. This allows a slow drip of water onto the roots. There is also the addition of mulch to help keep the Roots cooler and preserve the moisture provided to the plant. Because the variegated ginger is can grow to six feet tall and spread from five to ten feet it is a preferred ornamental plant for lawns. The accent it provides to otherwise dark areas of your yard will liven up the area. If it is grown in pots the plant needs to be divided every couple of years because it is a very active growing plant. A traditional Chinese food called zongzi is often wrapped in the leaves of the shell ginger. This is a sweet or sticky rice which is also called a rice dumpling. During the Dragon Boat festival the zongzi is prepared using the leaves of the shell ginger plant as well as leaves from maize, lotus and banana plants. A beautiful plant, the shell ginger will make a wonderful addition to your home or garden area. They bloom from early to late summer. Easy to start and easy to grow, these are all around great plants. To see more
