Transferring spring bulbs from flower boxes

by Carrie
(Reston, VA)

I have always been a balcony gardener - my current balcony is my third in six years. I'm not much of an expert in anything - just like to have a small beautiful space.

This year I placed hyacinth, tulips and daffodils bought cheaply in separate pots at WalMart and put them in 3 window boxes along the railing. They are blooming now and just what I wanted.

I would like to place other flowers in these boxes as the season progresses, so what to do with the bulbs? In the place where I am currently living, I don't really have a cool place to store them (there is no basement). There is a small space on the ground in front where I might be able to plant them for next year - quite sunny but some shade.

Any advice on what to do will be greatly appreciated!
