Red Wiggler Worms are also known as the Eisenia fetida is related to the earthworm however, it is a species that feeds on decaying manure and vegetation.

This is a worm that you will hardly ever find in the dirt. Its home is usually where no other Worms can survive much like its relative the Lumbricus rubellus which lives in feces and other soil that is extremely high in organic materials.

The scientific name comes from the odor of a liquid it releases when handled. This worm is sold commercially and this worm is most popular due the processing it does turning organic matter into compost that is quite fertile. The process which the Red Wiggler uses to complete this process is called vermiculture.

This worm is about one and a half inches to two and a half inches long. In addition to the compost they create they are also used for bait when fishermen are after pan fish and trout. They are used to feed fish in aquariums and ponds. Turtles like this delicacy as do many birds.

The red wriggler are probably a good choice for bait because they are active worms and are able to live under water longer than other earthworms. The Red Wiggler Worms can survive in extreme changes in temperatures.

From 38 degrees to 95 degrees this worm is pretty versatile when it comes to the range of temperatures it can handle.Red wrigglers worms help the soil by conditioning it as they move through it while searching for food. The high nitrous fertilizer they emit is a nitrous fertilizer that has 5 times the nitrogen you will find in just 6 inches of soil.

This fertilizer has 11 times the potash and 7 times the phosphorus found in soil. Just a one pound container can be home to about 800 to 1000 worms and eggs. This is all in about 400 square feet.

If you are planning to start a compost bin in your back yard, the redworms are the worm you want. They are sold by the pound and the typical price is about $20 per pound.

The red wriggler can eat about one half of its weight in food per day. When purchasing them for the compost, you will need to figure out how much waste you throw out throughout the week. The rule of thumb is to buy double the number of pounds of red wrigglers for every pound of waste you carry out.

These worms are still somewhat of a mystery. It has been reported that they live only a very few months while others say they can live as long as ten years.

You do not have to worry about making sure you have both male and female worms because these worms have the female and male sex organs although it still takes both to produce offspring.

The mature worms are noticeable by the red bands that they get around their neck. The worms reproduce about every 90 days.

Although they may seem slightly disgusting to some people due to their habitat and their odor if bothered, they do a great job of taking care of the waste you throw out.
