Red bird of Paradise (desert type, common in Vegas and Phoenix)

by Tyler
(St. George, UT USA)

I'm in St George UT, located in the high Mojave Desert (2700ft elev.) 1 1/2 hrs N. of Vegas, and I see very few red bird of paradise around here, however the yellow bird is everywhere here.

The ones I do see are planted in front of a south-facing wall in front yards. I asked locals with large plants what they do in the winter and they say just cut them down to the ground and they regrow every late spring. The difference with me is I live in an apartment so I'm growing one in a big clay pot and I don't wanna cut it down! lol.

I want to keep its size so it can bloom next spring at its current height. So my question, can I bring it inside now with the nights just getting into the upper 30s and what all do I need to do while inside to keep it healthy till spring? I have a west window for plenty of afternoon sun. Thanks
