Question: Can my bird of paradise survive the cold?

by Donna
(riverview florida)

Question: I had a friend give me a bird of paradise plant. She was moving so we dug it up and keep the roots together. I planted it out side and everyone said bring it in because it was going to get cold in Florida. So I put it in a big pot with good soil is it gonna be okay?

Answer: Moving your bird of paradise inside is a good idea. I'm located in West Central Florida and we are experiencing below freezing temperatures, which can and has killed many tropical plants. Plus, since it has recently be replanted in a container it may still not began to grow. Plus its Winter, a time where growth is as fast as mud rolling uphill. If you decide not to bring it inside, cover it with a protective cloth or plant blanket to keep it from freezing.

Good Luck
