Plants, fruits and nut trees to grow in Baja California

by Darryl Bruns
(San Felipe, BC Mexico)

I recently moved from northern Canada to San Felipe in Baja California Norte. We really like it here even though the economy is depressed. I have purchased a beautiful acreage here overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

It gets very hot here during July, August, and September but never the--less I would like to do some experimenting to find some fruit or nut trees that may do OK. There is water available from aquifers at about 80 foot. The soil is
primarily sand but the sewage treatment plant is close enough that I could truck solid processed waste to enhance the soil.

My thought was to use a large diameter auger attached to my Cat loader to bore holes that I
could fill with enhanced soil to give things a good start.

I haven't really had much experience with this
sort of thing but I would certainly appreciate any thoughts that you might offer.

Thanks so much.
