The Orange Jessamine Is Also Known As Lakeview Jasmine

Common names:Orange Jessamine, Lakeview Jasmine, Chinese box, Chinese Cosmetic Boxwood

Family Name:

The scientific name for the Orange Jessamine is “Murraya paniculata (L.) Jacq” this is pronounced mer-RAY-yuh pan-ick-yoo-LAY-tuh. and it belongs to the Rutaceae, roo-TAY-see-ee, family of plants. This family name basically means bitter herb. There are many plants that belong to this family of plants including Orange, Lemon, Key Lime and all of our common citrus plants. This is a very common family of plants and unless there is a dislike for citrus, we’ve all probably come into contact with them in our every day lives. I know I can not eat my salmon with out a nice piece of lemon on it.

Plant Description:

The Orange Jessamine is considered to be an evergreen type of plant as the leaves do not change color nor do the fall off as some plants will do. It is also commonly known as a shrub or small bush but can grow to a height of twelve feet in the right conditions. Some people have bought them as small plants and within a couple of years, they have shot to over five feet. The Orange Jessamine can also be cultivated to be certain sizes or shapes to fit your garden theme. The leaves are a nice bright shiny green and it flowers grow in bunches of brilliant white that have an amazing scent to them. The flowers bloom many times throughout the year and leave a small red fruit that has a bitty tangy taste to it. This is truly one of the most beautiful of the citrus plants even though the fruits are not the tastiest.

Plant Location:

Orange Jessamine thrives in warm tropical climates. The also do well in more dry arid conditions if they are watered regularly. The point is they need warmth. If you live in the southern United States, from the west coast to the east, you will have great success with this plant. This plant originated in the tropical climates of Asia so the main theme is keep them warm. If you live in Minnesota, this will not be the plant for you unless you have a green house that is heated in the winter time when it gets below freezing temperatures. If you live in a colder climate, you can grow this plant indoors if you choose or if you have a room that is large enough to handle a plant of this size. It will definitely make your house smell great when it is in bloom. Culture Needs:

One of the most important needs the Orange Jessamine has is water. Since this is a tropical plant, the soil must be keep moist at all times or the plant will not live long. Water it daily or when you see the soil has gone dry. It also needs to have a neutral soil, meaning that it should not have too much acid or alkaline in it. You will also need to make sure you fertilize it regularly because it needs a lot nutrients to keep it growing large, healthy and flowering. If you would like to clone your plant, or start new plants from your existing one, you can do this but taking a cutting and planting that cutting. In a few months, you will see new growth on the cuttings.

Landscape Usage:

You can put the Orange Jessamine just about anywhere in your yard that has shade. You do not want this plant to be in direct sun light as it is not good for it. It is ok if it has indirect sunlight, but you really do not want the full sun on this plant for long periods of time. If you are not planning on trimming it down, and would like to let it grow at its own pace, you may want to make sure it is planted in an area of your yard that can accommodate a twelve foot plant. You will also need to have some sort of topsoil in the area you are planting it, as I said before the soil needs to be neutral and most of our soil in our yards is not. You can also grow this in your green house in a pot if you do not wish to plant it outside.

Pros:

Some of the pros to the Orange Jessamine are its ability to grow in tropical climates. It has a lovely floral scent when it is in bloom and will make any yard seem like an enchanted garden.

Cons:

If you live in a drier climate, you will need to water this plant regularly, I live in Southern Florida and we go through water shortages all the time, so if you are in an area that has these issues, your plant may suffer as it does need constant watering. Another con is that it does grow to be so large. If you do not know how to cultivate a large shrub to maintain a smaller size, this plant may grow too much for your needs.
