Common Names Night Blooming Jasmine, Night Blooming Cestrum
Family Name Solanaceae (from Nightshade Family)
Plant Description The Night Blooming Jasmine Plant is a shrub like plant that has deep green leaves that are smooth.
The plant sprawls as it grows and can form a mound as large as twelve feet, though most are no more than four feet in diameter. The plant's stems are similar to vines, with larger leaves, usually measuring between four and eight inches in length.
In appearance, the plant blooms throughout warm weather. The flowers themselves are very small, usually green to white in color. The flowers come off the stem, usually following the vine.
The flowers give away to small berries that are shiny white in color. The small flowers may seem insignificant, though delicate and beautiful up close. Nevertheless, most will recognize the scent of the flowers, as it is sweet and strong.
Plant Location
This Jasmine plant is native to tropical portions of North and South America. It is also in the West Indies.
Culture Needs
Cultivating the Night Blooming Jasmine starts with providing a light, loose, sandy soil for it. The plant is not overly difficult to maintain, though it is not salt tolerant.
There is little to provide for the plant outside of quality soil, as it will easily adapt to the surroundings. It is not able to survive through frost, so frost protection is required wherever the plant will be grown.
Landscape Usage
Warmer climates will find that the Night Blooming Jasmine shrub is quite commonly used in landscaping.
It does not do well in colder climates, due to its inability to manage frost conditions.
It works well as a mixed border additive. It is also attractive when used as a freestanding plant.
It can work well as a background plant, too. The plant is attractive and it does not overtake the area. Those looking for an attractive plant for butterfly gardens, this form of jasmine works well.
It provides a source of food for some types of caterpillars and its sweet smell is attractive to them.
Pros
Night Blooming Jasmine is an attractive plant that works well in most situations. Because of its beautiful smell, it can work well in those areas where an individual can stop to smell it.
At the same time, it requires little care and is a simple, unpretentious plant for the garden. This form of Jasmine does very well in the tropical climates, including in hardiness zones 8 through 11.
During a freeze, it will die to the ground, but should come back during the spring months, in hardiness zones 8 and 0. Another benefit is that this plant is quite easy to grow.
It can be started at a young plant, and will grow well and quickly. Propagate the plant from seed or by herbaceous stem cuttings.
Cons
Night Blooming Jasmine has a few cons. First, all portions of the plant, from the leaves to vines to the flowers and berries are unable to be digested and are poisonous for humans.
Additionally, the plant does require full sunlight to filtered sunlight. It will do alright with light shade but does better when fully exposed to the sun. Be careful with watering, over watering the plant is easy to do as it has moderate watering needs.
The plant can be large, requiring four to six feet worth of space and getting as tall as ten feet in height. Yet, this expansive size will fill in a garden or landscaping area well.
