Keeping birds and snakes out of vine-covered pergola

I just purchased my first Carolina Jessamine plants that I am planning to plant around the posts of my pergola. I am so excited to have such beautiful vines but I am concerned about having birds' nests and snakes inhabiting them once they grow over the pergola. Any suggestions as to what works?
