These house cactus plants require less maintenance that most other indoor plants

Bookmark and Share Many people are not aware of the fact that there are two kinds of house Cactus plants. If you are planning to have indoor cactus plants, the care and the environment that you will give to the cacti depends from where it originated. There are desert cacti and jungle cacti.

The preferred choice for these desert plants is jungle cacti. As its natural habitat is that of forest and woods, it can thrive in shade and the minimal sunlight inside a home. This makes them ideal house Cactus plants. The most popular of these jungle cacti is the Christmas cactus.

Jungle cacti do thrive in damp and moist soil. Yet, as for indoor cactus plants, the soil must have excellent drainage. Even as the forest conditions make the roots of this plant continuously moist, they will not in an enclosed area in damp soil as there is lack of air circulation.You can use special potting soil for cactus plants or amend the soil with sand. The bottom of the container can be line with up to two layers of rocks or pebbles.

These plants prefer partial shade. They will suffer when placed in a full sun environment. Artificial lighting like that of fluorescent lights will be sufficient for these house cactus plants to get their sunlight needs.

One key to having jungle cacti flower is to mimic the sunlight hours of the 4 seasons. Lessening the light exposure of these cactus plants during the winter season will encourage them to flower in the spring and summer.

As all indoor container plants, these cactus plants will need more frequent watering. The watering style that must be done is deep watering. Pour enough water into the container to soak the roots and until the water will seep out of the drain hole at the bottom of the container.

You may have to water your cacti plants at least once a week during summer and less frequently during colder seasons. These jungle cacti are not hardy plants and will suffer during cold winters. Fertilizing can be done on a regular basis as deep watering strips the soil of nutrients.

These house Cactus plants require less maintenance that most other indoor plants. They are ideally placed near openings to face the morning sun so that they can get their sunlight requirements.

Smaller cacti can be placed on top of tables and larger ones as decorative accents. Small jungle cacti can be planted in groups in a large container as their growing requirements are similar.
