Heathers

by Liz
(SW Oregon)

Question: For heathers, does your advice about not fertilizing annually apply to chemical fertilizers, or do you also mean organic fertilizers. I have been advised to fertilize four times a year with an acid food made up of organic ingredients such as cottonseed meal, fish bone meal and other amendments. I also have been advised to plant in aged bark as the soil sold around our area for raised beds turns a mix to cement. I'd appreciate your feedback, thanks, Liz

Answer: Organic fertilizer should take the place of chemical fertilizers. Crab meal, cocoa meal, bone meal powder, alfalfa meal and other Organic Fertilizers will work well for many plants.

I use worm castings, bat guano and horse manure on most of the plants I grow. Hope this helps.

Good luck.
