The world wants to lose weight and be healthy, but most of us don’t know that we can lower bad cholesterol and stay at our ideal weight if we have a place for strawberries in our daily diet.

And, if you grow strawberries in your backyard, you will not only be picking the best strawberries for your eating pleasure, you will also loose weight after you have spent much energy caring for the growing strawberries!

Growing strawberry plants is possible for places and countries with four seasons and with cooler climate.

Apart from these, growing strawberries can be done if the location where you plant them receives enough sunlight, has well-drained sandy loam soil and has no other plant that may compete with the soil’s nutrients.

Before growing strawberry plants, you may as well choose the variety that you like and the variety applicable in your locality. Strawberries can be classified into three varieties. There are strawberries that will bear fruits during spring.

They are the June-bearing strawberries. If your neighbor is growing strawberries and the plant has been bearing fruit throughout the year, your neighbor might be growing a Day Neutral variety. Farmers who harvest their strawberries twice a year are using Everbearing strawberries as their variety.

When growing strawberry plants, timing is essential. It is good to plant them in the spring when you can work well without weather disturbance.

The strawberry plant you use should have healthy, light-colored roots. Before digging it to the soil, you might as well sprinkle the soil with organic fertilizer to have more successes growing the berries.

There should also be a big, deep hole where the roots will be spread. You should also decide what system you will use when growing strawberries.

June bearing strawberry plants best thrive in a Matted Row System. Day Neutral and Everbearing Strawberries will also grow best using the Hill System.

When the first runners have finally appeared, it is helpful for you to mulch the soil beds. If not mulch often, the soil’s temperature may rise thus dehydrating its nutrients.

You also need to water your strawberries especially if it is now producing fruits. Remember, that water will help produce juicer fruits.

Along the course of growing strawberries, some of the soil’s nutrients are also lost thus you need to replenish them by applying fertilizer, once in a while. A talk with a local expert is one of the best places to get accurate information on fertilizer use.

If you believe it is time to harvest the fruit, taste one or two berries to see if they are sweet and ripe enough to pick. Some farmers usually wait for three days to pick the best fruits. Never forget, strawberries are fragile fruits thus you have to be careful in picking them.

It might be tiresome for you at first, but once you get the sense of the whole process, you will surely realize that growing strawberries is an enjoyable hobby and it could help you stay healthy.
