Growing Broccoli Plants: How to plant, Grow And Harvest This Highly Nutritious Vegetable

Vegetable Gardening Home

Growing Broccoli Plants:

Common Name: Broccoli

Type Of Plant: Vegetable

Grow Height: 2-3 Feet

Grow Width: 2-4 Feet

Sunlight Needs: Full Sun to partial sun

Water Needs: Average

Soil Type: Rich soil: High nitrogen and manure content: Growing broccoli is not a difficult vegetable to grow. It can be planted before the danger of frost is over because a light frost will not harm it. The cooler weather is appreciated by broccoli. It will produce beyond the first harvest and only needs about 4 to 5 hours of sun per day. This will depend upon what area of the country in which you reside. Many people say a growing broccoli plant prefers full sun but it does not like hot weather so if you live where the temperatures soar, full sun is not advised.

Broccoli vegetable gardening:

The vegetable is normally transplanted rather than seeding. The time is right at about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost. The plants should be placed about 18 inches apart. The growing broccoli heads will not develop to their full potential if the plants are too close together. The larger varieties may need even more space between the plants.

Another thing that may cause the heads not to develop fully is the soil in which the broccoli is planted. If it is the soil that does not drain well such as clay this will affect the size of the heads. One thing you can try if the weather is too warm is mulching the plant to help keep them cool as this is another thing that affects the development of the heads.

Harvesting

This vegetable does not have very deep roots. The watering should be consistent and about one to one and a half inches a week will be sufficient. Fertilizer can be used when you plant the vegetable and every month some can be added to the soil.

The best type is a slow release fertilizer. Even if you do not have the space for a garden, it can be grown in pots. The smaller types are perfect for growing in pots.A growing broccoli plant needs a soil with a pH level of between 6.0 and 6.5. The use of calcium, boron and magnesium will help the plant to get maximum growth and will prevent the stems from being hollow.

The vegetable may be harvested when the buds are firm. It should be cut on the stalk from 5 to 10 inches. This will allow the stalk to produce side shoots that will produce many smaller heads.

Gardening Pests

The worst garden pests for plant are loopers and cabbage worms. If you do not want to pick them off daily there are products such as Rotenone, BTK and Pyrethrum. You can use row covers to keep insects from getting on the vegetable. This will keep aphids, maggots and moths off the plant.

The better the air circulation, the less chance there is of disease such as downy mildew and head rot. The planting should be done to keep it from becoming mature in the heat of the summer. If you want to prevent club root, keeping the pH level of the soil at 6.8 or higher will prevent this problem.
