Growing butterfly Bush

I seen a tree or brush that was 8 or 9 feet tall, it was beautiful. The leaves on the tree are a dark green and they are shape like that of a marijuana plant, the base is like a tree trunk not a bush. Then the top has purple flowers that stand up like candles. I ask the person who owned it what kind of tree was it? she told me it is called a butterfly plant. I went to Lowe's to purchase one and I was not happy with what they called a butterfly bush. It had the blooms that were purple but they don't stand up or the leaves are just single long and narrow. Can some one help me to know what I'm looking for. Thank you
