Ground Cover Plants - How to Best Use Them

When using ground cover plants you will want to find some that are fairly quick growing. The ones that spread quickly are the best for results you can see in a short amount of time.Naturally the best ground cover is grass but this is not always possible. Besides, there are other plants that are much prettier than grass.

Just remember you cannot walk on plants you use for ground cover. One of the benefits is you do not have to mow this area and the maintenance is practically non-existent. If you are into the least amount of work for the best looking lawn, this is definitely the way to go.

The benefits of ground cover plants are they can make an area that is difficult to work with a nice looking spot. If you have steep areas around your home, this is perfect for planting ground cover. The area around the bottom of trees - this is a difficult area for grass to grow or to be mowed - is great for ground cover.

English Ivy

There are some plants that make beautiful ground cover for any area. One such plant is English ivy. This plant is an evergreen and they grow to about 6 inches tall. They are great for shade plants and also a wonderful planting for areas you cannot get grass to grow.

You do not want to plant English Ivy where it will be exposed to full sun because this will burn the leaves. If you plant English Ivy close to anything it can vine on, it will certainly climb. The best spot is in a clear area where there are no trees the vines can damage.

Moss Pink

This is certainly one of the better choices for ground cover especially if you have an area that is hard to grow anything. Poor soil and bare ground are wonderful for planting Moss Pink. Very thick foliage is indicative of Moss Pink which makes a great ground cover.

The springtime brings a bevy of flowers in white, pink and purple. This plant does not mind rocks. It will grow fine in just about any soil and cover rocks with its beautiful foliage and flowers. In warmer climates the plants stays green year round. Once in awhile they will get spots of dead leaves in amongst the others. Removing these and starting new ones will take care of this problem.

Choosing ground cover plants is basically a matter of preference. Almost any type of ground cover will do as long as it is planted in the right spot for its tolerance. Some plants like plenty of sunshine so this will not work if you are looking for ground cover for a shady area. Likewise the ones that prefer shade will not do well in bright sunshine.

Remember to keep in mind where you will be planting this ground cover so it has the best chance of survival.
