Controlling Slugs

In setting up trap crops, gardeners include a particular type of plant which can divert the interest of the garden slugs. Some crops that make an excellent trap are green lettuces, calendula, marigolds, cabbage, zinnias, comfrey leaves, and beans.

Plants are also used as barriers. These plants especially repel slugs, and thus, they are planted around the perimeter of the garden to keep them from invading the garden.

Among these barrier plants are the mint, garlic, ginger, chives, red lettuce, red cabbage, sunflower, sage, fennel, chicory, foxglove, and endive.

Besides the plants, materials such as eggshells, wood shavings, sand, hair, ash, and diatomaceous earth can be placed around vulnerable plants. They should be kept dry to be effective. After the rain, top the plants again.

The use of slug predators is also popular in garden slug control.

Its concept is using predators like ground beetles, frogs, and birds which prey on slugs. A frog’s diet consists of slugs, while birds such as blackbirds, thrushes, rooks, and crows love to eat slugs.
