Natural Garden Pest Control

Garden Pest Control:

Anything you plant from flowers to food can be attacked by different types of common garden pests. Not only are they aggravating when it comes to stripping leaves and ruining your carefully planned garden, but they can actually harm your lawn.

One such common Garden Pest is the Japanese beetle.

The adult beetles will strip leaves down to nothing. Since they feed on many different types of plants, there are a few precautions you should take to avoid these pests moving into your garden.

  • Larkspur is one plant that is toxic to the Japanese beetle so planting some in close proximity to your garden is an effective garden pest control method.

  • Smartweed and geraniums are also known to be effective methods of controlling the beetle.

  • Japanese Beetles will also feed on the roots of your grass.

This can ruin your lawn by leaving large brown spots amongst your nice green grass. Raising the ph level of the soil seems to help in the battle against these pests as well. However, if you want to keep them away permanently, plant larkspur.

Garden Pest Control For Slugs

Another garden pest you will want to prevent moving into your garden is the slug. This is especially true if you are planning on planting fruit trees. Slugs feed on these and they are destructive on just about any type of leafy plants.

They are slimy and leave a trail as they slide across the leaves of the plants. They can be controlled with different remedies.

One such method is placing containers of beer around the perimeter of your garden. This is a trap for the slugs and they will not make it past the container into the garden area.

Salt is also very effective at getting rid of slugs if you see them.

The salt dries them up and they will no longer be a problem. However, this is a solution for the ones you see. You can also make a border around your garden area using ashes, lime or sand and this will prevent them from entering.

There are many types of garden pests that will make a beeline for your garden as soon as the plants start breaking through the soil. A few of the common ones are:

*** mealy bug*** Mexican beetle*** deer*** mice and rats*** fire ants*** gophers*** raccoon*** opossum* striped cucumber beetle

There are natural pest control repellents that can be used to rid your garden of many of these pests.

You may also use a few precautions to keep them out of the garden. Cucumber beetles, for instance like to feed on vining plants.

By providing a trellis for the vines to climb you are keeping them off the ground and out of harms way.

Another way to repel this pest is by planting radishes, catnip and tansy. These are natural repellents of the cucumber beetle.

Using a little common sense and a few natural pest control remedies you can keep your garden clear of pests that are bound and determined to get to your vegetables before you do.

Your beautiful garden need not be ruined an influx of insects. A few simple solutions and your garden can be pest free. Top of garden pest control page
