HOME PAGE: Despite how harsh the desert may be, many types of desert plants that grow in arid conditions. These plants are hardy, thriving on little water, a massive amount sunlight, and conditions that would kill most living things. However, just because these plants can survive in an environment many creatures cannot, that does not necessarily make them lasting houseplants. These special plants can serve as conversation starters, as well as adding a unique atmosphere to your home. For those interested in such an opportunity, there are a few key things that you need to remember. Plants like the Apache Plume, the Arizona Poppy and the Blue Phacelia require a great deal of sun and heat. While they can survive the cold spikes of the reigons night, these plants need conditions that mimic the desert in order to survive. If you plan to grow them in your house, you should take care to give them a great deal of light and be cautious of over-watering them. When you think of these plants, the most common one to come to mind is the cactus. Wild cacti plants can grow to a few feet tall, and usually do not handle home life very well. Many require special greenhouses with artificial lighting to survive. Don't be discouraged, there are other species that can be grown indoors for your enjoyment. These include the Acanthocalycium klimpelianum, the Acanthocalycium spiniflorum, the Acanthocalycium thionanthum v. variiflorum and the Acanthocalycium violaceum, as well as a few other varieties. All of these tend to be small, round in shape, and have one or many blossoms at the tip of the plant. Unlike common belief, you cannot just neglect these plants and water it whenever you want. They need a specific amount of exposure to the sun, and planned feeding. Without this, they will wither and die. This variety of plants are among some of the most difficult to keep in a home, so you will need to approach their care with caution. By Making the decision to follow through with the tedious work of these plants need, follow the few rules for successful growth – scheduled watering, proper temperatures and exposure to sunlight – you will be able to enjoy your cacti and other desert plants for years to come.
