Container planting is an excellant option those living in an apartment or a small house and would love to grow plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Container planting allows a novice or an experienced gardener the chance to create his or her own beautiful space and fresh vegetables indoors or out.

Small Spaces? With container planting You Can Have a Garden, Too

If you have a terrace, a balcony, a small yard or even just a patio you have room for this type of gardening. Imagine the fragrance of flowers whiffing through the air from your patio or balcony. They can be enjoyed for most of the summer and some of these plants can be brought in when the weather turns cold. Herbs are one of the plants that people love to grow and these may be grown in a window sill providing there is enough light.

However, if you have a patio or an area that you can set up a container garden you will be amazed at the plants you can grow. Almost any container you can find will be fine for planting. If you want to mix several varieties of flowers together, a long narrow planter is perfect for planting many type of flowers. A wooden barrel can be used if you want to plant something that needs room to grow.

Moving the Plants and Watering is not Difficult

Today you can purchase a handy plant dolly that has wheels on the bottom. All you have to do is wheel the plant to wherever you want it moved. The plant can be placed on a platform that is round just like the planter you are using. Then when it is a full grown plant and weighs too much to lift it can be wheeled to another area or moved for watering.

Many people are under the impression that these gardens are too much trouble because they require frequent watering. All you have to do is choose a sprinkler for your garden and a timer and set it to water every so often. This takes care of this aspect and what do you have left to do but make sure they are fertilized occasionally and sit back and watch your garden grow.

Containers are Easy to Find

From a cement block to planter boxes there are many options for container planting. As long as the container you will be using has holes for drainage (and if it doesn't you can drill some) the plants will be happy. Most plants just do not like to sit in water constantly. This is often the cause of root rot which kills many plants.

Keep in mind when finding the container you will be using for your plants that the grown plant is going to require a little more room than when it started. There are many vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and peppers that will need to have to be in at least a five gallon pot or planter.

The smaller plants such as radishes and herbs can be planted in one gallon or smaller depending upon how large they will get. The flowers you plant will need to be in a container that is large enough for the roots. The height of the flower is the determining factor as to what size the container should be. The taller it will be when grown the larger the pot you will need.

Feeding the plants is another thing you will want to make sure you are doing on a regular basis. The soluble fertilizer is the best type to use for container planting. Two things contribute to the loss of fertilizer which may mean you will need to fertilize more often. The drainage of plants washes away a lot of the fertilizer and also the plants themselves use more fertilizer when grown in containers.

Container planting Design

When you get ready to put all your container plants into pots creating a one of a kind garden is not complicated. Figure out the arrangement you will use, putting taller plants in with shorter ones to make an interesting container. There are many types that do very well together.

The containers can be different as well. Small, large and medium sized all work well together. Maybe you have some tall plants that can shade the smaller ones that do not need bright light. These types of plants often grow in the wild and the beauty the combination provides is absolutely gorgeous. Plants that vine are a good plants for this kind of gardening.

No matter which type of garden you plant - flowers or vegetables - when they begin to mature you will be glad you did.
