The Clematis Armandii is a fast growing vine plant with fragrant white star-shaped flowers.

Armand’s Clemantis, Clematis Armandii

Originally from China, this evergreen flowering vine known as Armandii or Armand’s clemantis is a popular landscaping plant. It is a fast climber and can reach the heights of 20 feet quickly and spread over an area of 5 feet.

This vine plant is much sought after due to their fragrant white star-shaped flowers.

Description

The Clematis Armandii vine flowers are five-petaled, star-shaped, white and prominently stamen and can become nearly 3 inches large.

There are evergreen clemantis that have pink flowers. These flowers grow in clusters, known as panicles, at the end of the branches.

The Clematis Armandii vines characteristically climb up support with the aid of their leaf stems which are similar to tendrils that twist and wrap itself to the support.

The compounded leaves of the Armandii have 3 narrow lanceolate leaflets that are a 5 to 7 inches large, and have glossy green color with prominent veins.

Cultivation

The vine plant clemantis is easy to grow and is pest free. There may be a need to occasionally prune the plant to prevent overgrowth.

The blooming period is from late winter and may continue on until the end of summer, with another bloom period again during autumn.

It needs a lot of space to allow for the spread of up to 5 feet. When it is not given support like a trellis to climb, it will ramble over other plants.

Though this plant will prosper under full sun, the root system prefers a cool environment and needs to be shaded especially from the midday sun.

It will not survive in soil conditions that have high water retention. Establish plants are drought tolerant. For better blooms, the soil must be nutrient rich and fertilizing regularly is recommended.

It will not survive in places that experiences extremes in temperature. Prepare the plant for the winter by mulching, yet care is needed to avoid covering the base of the vine.

Decorative Use

The Armandii is home to many nesting birds. It is commonly used for trellises, arbors, arches, and other similar structures and placed in areas for it to scramble over shrubs.

It is an excellent plant to use for screening and can be grown to cover fences and unsightly structures. This climbing vine is often planted at the base of a tree that sheds it leaves during winter time, as its evergreen foliage will make up for the lack of leaves of the tree during winter.
