chicken manure for plants

by Shannon Gilligan
(Wasilla, Alaska)

My sister in law owns about 30 birds, and she gave us soil or compost from her chicken house. I am a first time gardener, and I just put it in my planter box and started planting.

Well, the whole box is gridded with thousands of little weeds, (I think), and I'm not sure now if the chicken manure compost is too acidic to grow a vegetable garden in.

I also live in Alaska and have not identified these hearty weeds in the box. Is there anything I can do to save the vegetables I have already planted??

Thank You,

Newbie in Alaska
