Cherry Tree

The Cherry Tree is one of the loveliest trees you can maintain. The word “cherry” came from an ancient city in the country of Turkey. The name describes the fruit and the tree itself.

The fruit is under a “drupe” classification. The middle part of the cherry contains a hard core holding its seed. The cherry tree has hundreds of varieties.

The cherry can fall under one of two groups. It could either be classified as a sour cherry or a wild cherry. Originally from Europe or the western part of Asia, wild cherries are usually for plain eating.

If you purchase cherries from the market, you can bet they are wild cherries. Sour cherries, also from Europe or the western part of Asia, are less enjoyable to eat. This type of cherry is usually used for cooking, like in making jelly or jam.

The trees aren’t well-known for their tasty fruits only. These trees are also known for their striking blossoms or flowers. The flowers of the tree appear in clusters and they bloom during the spring. The beauty of the cherry blossoms has inspired quite a lot of songs and poems.

Cherry Fruit

The cherry fruit is circular and has a groove at the apex. The outer layer of the cherry is smooth and has a tiny groove on one side. The color of the fruit’s skin varies from pale red to a deep red, though there are a few cultivars that are yellow and white. The fruit may be sweet or sour, but there are also some types that are intermediate.

Geographical Range

The tree is a member of the same family as plums and prunes, however, its fruit is way smaller. The geographical range of this tree is all through most parts in Asia, Europe, northern part of Africa, and most parts of North America.

The tree, which originated from the continent of Asia, has cultivars that will flourish in arctic regions. But, most of its breeds grow best in zones 4 to 8.

Leaves and Bark

It can grow from 6 to 30 feet tall which depends on the cultivar, although, there are a few shrub trees. The bark of the cherry tree is reddish brown in color and has rows of lenticels (horizontal markings).

It's foliage is pale to very dark green in color. Its droopy leaves are about 2 to six inches and length with an edge that’s finely toothed. The flowers of the cherry tree are arranged in umbels.

This means that every flower is on the tip of a long stalk. During autumn, the leaves will turn to stunning colors, it ranges from pink, orange, crimson, to brown.Wood

The wood is red in color and is fine grained. The wood is made into tool handles. Makers of cabinets once treasured the wood of the cherry tree.

Types of Cherries

Black Cherry

Black cherries are known for being the tallest available tree and for creating stunning white clusters of flowers. Its fruit is small and black in color.

It is ready for picking in summer. The negative feature of the tree is its susceptibility to certain types of caterpillars and the tendency for its fruits to fall on the ground on their own and discolor concrete. It is best to grown them in grass and then close to a sidewalk.

Purple-Leaved Plum

Another beautiful type is the purple leaved plum. Even with its name, it is actually not a plum, but a bigger type of cherry tree. This tree is most identifiable for its beautiful purple flowers.

Through flowering season, the flower’s usually change colors from dark purple to light pink. One of the best things about this type of tree is that it’s pest resistant.

Amur Chokeberry

This tree is mostly known for its golden bark. Its flowers are white and very tiny. They bloom in mid-spring. This tree needs damp soil with proper drainage. This is a high maintenance tree that’s very vulnerable to pests and plant diseases. Its fruits are sumptuous and its flowers are abundant.

You should be able to find a tree that will grow well in your area, no matter what the situation of your yard or soil is. They are great additions to your yard. When the cherry tree flowers, it will impress every single person that looks at it.
