Can broccoli planted in the spring, be cut back and allowed to grow and produce in the fall?

by Peppie Goevert
(St. Louis, MO)

It got very hot where I live and my broccoli went to seed before I noticed. I left the plants where they are and for fun let them grow. They just kept growing and are about 3 and half feet tall. Can I trim them back and will it grow more heads in the autumn that I can eat? How would I trim them.
