Can Bird of Paradise Be Grown From Seed?

by Terry
(Tucson AZ)

Question: Can I start these plants from the seeds of others? We have a whole bagful of seeds from a friends plants, and want to start them in our own garden.

How can we do this? She says they just pop up and grow wild in her yard, so I wonder how I make this happen in mine. Also, I should tell you I am not green thumbed.

Thank You Terry

Answer: Yes, the bird of paradise can be started from seed. The best seeds are those which are fresh off the mother plant. To improve the germination of seeds, soak them in warm water overnight. Start with fresh warm potting soil, and insert the seeds an inch into the earth. Keep in a warm area until they sprout. This plant has a slow germination period, which can last up to a year but usually less.

Good Luck
