The Astralugus Plant Is Widly Used In Chinese herbal medicine For Good Reason--Here's Why

Astralugus Plant, Astragalus Membranaceus

Chinese herbal medicine has used the roots of the Astralugus since the ancient times. The Chinese name for the root of this herb is Huang Qi.

This plant formerly only grew wild in the hilly regions of China, Manchuria, and Mongolia. It is now widely cultivated for its unique healing properties.

Astralugus Plant Description:

A perennial plant that looks similar to the common Pea Plant , this herb can reach up to an average height of 3 feet. It has yellow to reddish flowers, and seed pods. It is a twining plant and can produce up to 30 seeds. The seeds are sown during spring or early in the summer.

The woody root has a tough yellow to brown cover and a whitish yellow interior. The highly fibrous inner root is the part of the plant used for medicinal applications.

Harvesting is done during autumn after the flowering period. It takes 4 years before the herb is mature enough to harvest for its roots. This plant requires sandy soil with excellent drainage.

Huang Qi, The Root

The Root of the herb is used fresh or dried. It is used in culinary applications. The most common way it is prepared is by reducing the root to a pulp.

It imparts a certain type of sweetness to a dish, a taste that is similar to licorice. This is then made as an ingredient for soups. When it is dried, it is sliced lengthwise. This is how it is often presented and sold in Chinese herbal stores.

Huang Qi can be made into powders, tinctures, and extracts. The most common way it is consumed is by making it into a tea. These Huang Qi teas are very potent in treating exhaustion. The hot beverage usually prepared with some Ginseng Root .

To make a cup of this rejuvenating tea, you can place a teaspoon each of dried Astralagus and Ginseng into pot with a pint of water that is already boiling. Lower the flame and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the roots to steep for at least 20 more minutes.

This is then strained to remove the fibrous roots. The remaining liquid is to be drunk at least twice a day. The energy boost of these teas will last for around 5 hours after consumption. There are many health benefits to be gained by drinking Astralagus teas often.

This herb is widely used for treatment of respiratory illness, diabetes, and stomach ulcers. It is also used to regain strength, to boost immunity and for its anti-carcinogenic properties. It is safe to consume regularly as a wellness drink.
