If the pile is stinking, that may be because there are other types of composting that is happening in the pile or there is are certain things in it that emit the odor.

The Process:

Aerobic composting starts with the creation of a pile. A pile can be made using organic material like dried leaves and other similar items that decay naturally. This pile will generate its own heat to start the active composting process.

You may opt to turn the composting material after a week or so to help with the aeration process and for the pile to decompose evenly.

The next part of the process is the curing stage. You will notice that the Compost Pile will no longer continue to break down even if you turn it.

When it is at this stage, there is a certain type of fungi that will grow to continue the composting process.

When the organic material becomes dark brown to black in color, the particle size is reduces and it looks like soil, then the composting process has completed it cycle. It is ready to be used and will give a lot of nutrient benefits to your plants.

Safety Precaution

It is important to remember that the Compost Pile needs a lot of air especially during the first stage.

Adding oxygen into the pile by means of turning will allow the living organisms to function better, remove trapped gases, water vapor, and excess heat.

It is important to remove excess heat from the pile especially if you live in a hot climate as it might be a cause of fire from overheating
